Recursive least squares with forgetting for online estimation of vehicle mass and road grade: theory and experiments
نویسندگان
چکیده
Good estimates of vehicle mass and road grade are important in automation of heavy duty vehicles, vehicle following manoeuvres or traditional powertrain control schemes. Recursive least square (RLS) with multiple forgetting factors accounts for different rates of change for different parameters and thus, enables simultaneous estimation of the time-varying grade and the piece-wise constant mass. An ad hoc modification of the update law for the gain in the RLS scheme is proposed and used in simulation and experiments. We demonstrate that the proposed scheme estimates mass within 5% of its actual value and tracks grade with good accuracy provided that inputs are persistently exciting. The experimental setups, signals, their source and their accuracy are discussed. Issues like lack of persistent excitations in certain parts of the run or difficulties of parameter tracking during gear shift are explained and suggestions to bypass these problems are made.

متن کاملAdaptive model predictive control for co-ordination of compression and friction brakes in heavy duty vehicles
In this paper, an adaptive model predictive control scheme is designed for speed control of heavy vehicles. The controller coordinates use of compression brakes and friction brakes on downhill slopes. Moreover the model predictive controller takes the actuator constraints into account. A recursive least square scheme with forgetting is used in parallel with the controller to update the estimate...
متن کاملEstimation of Vehicle Mass and Road Grade
This thesis describes development of a real-time-implementable algorithm for simultaneous estimation of a heavy vehicle’s mass and time-varying road grade and its verification with experimental data. Accurate estimate of a heavy vehicle’s mass is critical in several vehicle control functions such as in transmission and stability control. The goal is to utilize the standard signals on a vehicle ...
متن کاملSOC estimation for LiFePO4 battery in EVs using recursive least-squares with multiple adaptive forgetting factors
This work presents a novel technique which is simple yet effective in estimating electric model parameters and state-of-charge (SOC) of the LiFePO4 battery. Unlike the well-known recursive least-squares-based algorithms with single constant forgetting factor, this technique employs multiple adaptive forgetting factors to provide the capability to capture the different dynamics of model paramete...
متن کاملEstimation of Tire-Road Friction by Tire Rotational Vibration Model
Tire-road friction is the most important piece of information used by active safety systems. However, most conventional friction estimation/ detection methods are accurate only within the non-linear region. In addition, such methods require numerous sensors, such as yaw rate sensors, acceleration sensors, and steering angle sensors. In this paper, a friction estimation method using a tire vibra...
